OLTP or Data Warehouse? It makes a difference.

If Data Warehouse RAID5 may be appropriate otherwise, unless using an Apple XServe RAID I'd stay away from it.

For CRS and Vote us 0+1 and yes you will waste some disk but that's the price of admission.

Otherwise ... you vendor's recommendation should be taken with respect to the RAID. So, for example, on a NetApp I'd stay with their RAID4 implementation througout.
