Which, to be quite honest, is not necessarily a bad thing. The number of people holding the title "DBA", today, far outstrips the actual need if DBAs were highly productive and leveraging even the currently existing toolset such as RMAN, ADDM, OEM, GRID, etc. Management could likely replace half of all current DBAs with people that make effective use of the new tools and productivity would go up: Not down.

I expect our profession to need fewer and fewer people over the years and to require a vastly improved and different skill set.

Why would anyone think it of value to "sell the DBA profession"? Are we supposed to be professionals or cheer leaders?

Can you imagine anyone ever writing "doesn't sell the neurosurgeon profession" or "doesn't sell the tax attorney profession"?

And for those, like Sybrand, unable for reasons of short-sighted management to be in 10g and have the ability to leverage ADDM ... I do understand this and can only hope that, in another 5-10 years, things will change.
