I don't know about the error you got installing 9i, but personally wouldn't be confortable with it.

Have you overwritten your 8i Oracle home with the 9i installation? If so you will be in trouble.

Your 8i database has apparently not shut down cleanly; migration should be performed on a cleanly shutdown database (transactional or immediate).

You took a good backup before starting all of that, hmmm?

If you still have 8i around and functional, try starting up the db and shutting down immediate.
