I was referring to the application vendor. The application is very domain specific and extremely expensive. It was the best fit for the business needs. The application is only supported by the vendor on three platforms - Tru64, Solaris and Windows. We currently run Tru64, but do not want to invest in additional hardware due to the fact there is only 5 years left for this platform and the vendor has indicated they wil be removing support before then. Therefore, I cannot justify investing $200k+ on a platform which may only be useful for 2 years.

The vendor will be releasing a version of the app on Linux in 3rd quarter of 2006, but we cannot wait until then to upgrade our processing power. We need to improve performance as soon as we can.

We will not purchase Sun hardware again. We tried this and found their support was really unacceptable and slow (we also seemed to have more frequent hardware failures than we have had with other hardware. Our Alpha servers have been extremely rock solid and I will miss them!

In an ideal world you could just use the best technology available. However, in the real world, you have constraints imposed by the software vendors and in specialised domains with few alternatives, there aren't many options.
