Off the top of my head, I recall doing demonstrations where the user had to pre-exist in the database. But that was a while ago in 8i.

So I've just had a look at a 10g dump file done with transport_tablespace=Y and one of the first lines I saw in it was 'CONNECT SCOTT'... unlike a conventional dump file, therefore, this one does not issue 'create user scott' commands before hand, even in 10g. And that means it won't create user X in the target database, and user X will have to be created, manually, by your good self, before you start.
