There are several excellent books. My personal recomendation:

  1. from http://oracle.oreilly.com, Oracle Essentials, 3rd Edition:
  2. then from http://docs.oracle.com (or http://tahiti.oracle.com) Oracle-supplied "Concepts" manual
  3. then Thomas Kyte's Effective Oracle by Design and Expert One on One Oracle
  4. finally back from http://docs.oracle.com Administrator's Guiden for the DBA Application Developer's Guide - Fundamentals for the developer

That provides enough background to get started with Oracle properly.
