The archives, especially at comp.database.oracle.server, are full of discussions around this question.

In a nutshell, for learning Oracle9i R2 you can use the certified systems (of course) and *at* *least* the following uncertified kernels:

• Red Hat 9
• Fedora Core 1 & 2
• SuSE Professional 8.2, 9.0
• Mandrake 8, 9

Each flavor has issues and gotchas that have been discussed in the archives.
