When we were prepping to get the data off of the server, we set CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON, which apparently created a backup of the control in a location we determined by using the SHOW ALL command in RMAN. So we killed the server but we got a control file off first. So I think we should be ok. I found the quote from your post in the RMAN docs and have read through it again. So I think everything should be doable...
