The problem has been solved but we're not too sure how we did it.

We removed the value for the string NLS_LANG (left blank) in the PC registry and the communication process worked ok thereafter. This string is located at My Computer/HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/ORACLE.

No idea why this worked.

Will keep you posted when I find out why it worked.
