It is early in the morning and this is strictly from memory so I am apologizing in advance for any errors in fact or judgement but last time I did one of these I think we got something called a Hamilton 1750 (very inexpensive) and built a big JBOD rack. Used DataGuard to load it and just swapped out disks rather than ever backing up to tape. These days disks spinning at 15K RPM are cheaper than tapes. When a drive was full it was just popped out and replace with another drive.
