Having an OraInventory for each $ORACLE_HOME is better . That way you could have

8.1.7.0 and 8.1.7.4 under different $ORACLE_HOME 's and just may be apply
8.1.7.2 patchset to
8.1.7.0 $ORACLE_HOME .
