thanks for the responses.. I have a file called system in /etc/sysconfig (not in /etc) . I do have a /etc/sysctl.conf

Reg. using Oracle 8.1.6, that's what I have on CD and for now, all I need is an Oracle database. I have 9i on dvd, but need to get a dvd-rom first
