When you start digging into it, you'll discover that RMAN is just a whole lot easier than reinventing RMAN. It also is able to use some Oracle features that straight hot backups cannot, such as being smarter about block consistency and .

You need to become conversant with metalink.oracle.com. Among other things, there are helpful cookbooks and FAQ's, not to mention the preferred method of support.

You need to have management explicitly state what the backup objectives are.

The manuals are available as cd's in your installation media, and online at otn.oracle.net (free registration strongly recommended).

If the concepts are gobbledygook, you are over your head, and should get a good DBA in there. In fact, you should get a good DBA in there to straighten out the mess you don't even know you have.

There are faqs floating around. There's a new draft mini-faq targetted towards newbies on this group at http://www.dbaoracle.net . It's a work-in-progress.
