hmmmm, i should have actually tested the old parameter. Very interesting finding, thanks for that!

I was originally told about the change for 9iR2 by someone in Oracle Europe and that it had been changed in part to get away from the security risk of utl_file_dir, there were other reasons. I should have been suspicious that a parameter such as this would be obsolete without warning as it would break many existing applications on upgrade.

Thanks for your insight Howard, looks like it is really deprecated and not obsolete and a documentation bug - BUT does anyone from Oracle know the truth?
