I think the other posters have covered most of it, but a few observations anyway.

  1. The only thing that takes a long time is reinstalling Java. If you don't have that installed, then it's fairly quick to upgrade.
  2. Once you're at 8.1.7.4.0, don't forget to upgrade to the current version, which I think is 8.1.7.4.11... there was a 'major' minor release at 8.1.7.4.9 IIRC. This is an even quicker upgrade
  3. Once you're up-to-date, don't expect the software you're running to return the correct minor release numbers!
