ORA-03113 and describe

When I login on to a database via SQL*Plus remotely and try to describe 
a table a ORA-03113 error is generated.  The database is version 8.1.7 
on AIX 4.3.3.  Everything else is running fine.  Has anyone else run 
into this problem.
