I agree with Tim 100%. We've done exactly the same scenario as Tim's site since our databases' inception (mid 1990's). NEVER a problem! I recently added an "alter system checkpoint;" prior to the "shutdown abort". I believe that suggestion was posted a while back in this forum and sounded like a good idea.
