Hi Rick,

You shouldn't be afraid to use shutdown abort. I've not known it ever to cause a problem. What happens is that Oracle performs instance recovery when it starts up following a shutdown abort. I've not known this to fail. We routinely use a shutdown abort followed immediately by a startup and then a shutdown (either normal or immediate) in backup scripts to ensure that the Oracle server does shut down prior to doing a cold backup. These have run for years with no problem (at least none caused by the shutdown abort!).
