Well, there are many, many things to consider. Just off the bat, which OS? I could diss one. But more important are considerations such as backup (or it's more correct brother, restore), managerial considerations such as "don't run a development instance on a production box unless you want to be fired when something goes wrong," and technical considerations such as two particular software packages require different Oracle versions.

In the real world, this winds up translating to "we would like to have more boxes for these different things, but it's too expensive, so deal with it." Or even, shudder, "We _want_ everything to be in one instance on one box!"

On the other hand, between various clustering and parallel technologies, the limit's of "the box" may become fuzzy...
