The developers' preferences are unlikely to influence the bosses.

Mention desupport as you say, and emphasize *security vulnerabilities which can only be fixed by upgrading*. This always scares them sh*tless.

The developers will be happy anyway, since you've now obtained the approval to upgrade. So now everyone is your friend.

No-one in authority takes the time or trouble to understand the technical issues in any case, so just play the game. In case this worries your conscience; relax: it's actually in the best interests of the company anyway.
