As mentioned , I would not like to run this on any oracle database. I would just check the status of say 30 other oracle databases. Versions are all 8.0.3 onwards till 9.2.

Also the webserver is not in my domain and needs to be maintained by an independent intranet group, who would not expect any tool like OEM. Just the OracleNet/SQLNet client should be fine I guess ( hence thought of tnsping)

This need not be a very robust check either, so if the DB is hung, tnsping might still say DB is OK. But this would suffice since it is mainly as a business web site status.
