Tim,

Does it mean that removing the "extra" 2GB of RAM could solve the problem, or do we need to do
something else?
All the so called "smp" kernels support 64GB of RAM, so it is not easy to find a smp kernel with 4GB memory support only. We need smp, since it is a dual processor system.

Speaking about RAM, it seems that Linux has problems with process spawning and there could be some memory leak.
