If you were a financial institution that could afford precisely zero data loss, then this would be a very practical solution to a critical problem... and you would invest a bazillion dollars to make sure that the link (a) could cope and (b) didn't fail and thus cause problems on your primary site.

Is it practical for mom-n-pop operations, or anyone whose primary link to the standby site was no better than the T1 link you describe? Doubtful.
