IMHO, RMAN was a heap of crap when first introduced with 8.0. I have just revisited it (with, I admit, a prejudiced, negative, cynical attitude) on 9iR2, but despite all, I have to confess I was well impressed.

Give it another try (disk to disk, then tape archive the backup).
