I've just succeeded in getting 8.1.7 to install on SuSE 7.3.

I found that SuSE's Oracle 8.1.7 Support page immensely helpful in doing this (I got at it from the Oracle Support matrix page
http://www.suse.de/uk/business/certifications/certified_software/oracle/index.html - click on the appropriate box in the matrix). But there were a few other things I had to sort out myself (in addition to "unset LANG" mentioned below): Oracle expects Java to be in /usr/local/java and is very choosy in the version it needs - I linked it to Oracle's version in the installation media. Also after applying the glibc patch (needed to get dbassist to work) I needed to revert to the old version of svrmgr.

I should imagine that thing's won't be that different for 8.1.7 on SuSE 8.0, which according to the matrix is already certified.

Regards Phil Griffiths
