First 3 digits are all you need. Fourth digit refers to the generic patch level
and fifth to platform-specific patch level. So 8.1.7 IS Release 3 (8.1.6 was
Release 2), while 8.1.7.3 is Release 3 patchset 3. Starting with 9i R2 the
scheme changed a bit, now second digit is release number, third is appserver
release number, fourth and fifth are as they were before. So 9.2.0.1 is
Oracle 9i Release 2 patchset 1 (actually, there was no 9.2.0.0 available to
public) and 9.0.2.0 is 9iAS Release 2.
