Hi Dragon,

You must export the 8.1.7 database using the 7.3 version of export and then use 7.3 version of import to complete the process.

The reason for this is that an 8.1.7 database obviously contains features unknown of in 7.3 (a bit like DVDs in the 1980s). Therefore the 7.3 export creates a 7.3 'versioned' export file that the 7.3 import can understand, that doesn't contain objects that only exist in 8i and that is logically consistent to what is manageable in 7.3.

It does kinda make sense when you think about it.

BTW, this is one of those FAQ and a search of the google archives will provide much (and probably clearer) details on this.

There is also a whole chapter on this in the Utilities manual where it discusses using different versions of export.
