Question regarding 64-bit Oracle

We are currently running Oracle 8.1.7r3 32-bit on Solaris 8 64-bit.

What does upgrading to 64-bit do for us?
Is 64-bit stable for production environments?
It is safe to upgrade in this manner:
install oracle 64-bit.
create a database
import a logical export from the 32-bit database
