Monitoring changes can be useful anyway, even if there is tight version control. Consider it as auditing the development process. With the export method you are sure to miss nothing. You may still consider some filtering of the dump file, to suppress irrelevant changes (e.g. timestamps) and control characters. Converting to text with SHOW=YES is also an option. A nice diff-tool makes it all look quite professional. Best practice? YES to me.
