As I stated I can't comment on DB2 390 since I have no expertise on tis platform.
This includes acknowledging or disputing the behavior you observed on the undisclosdd DB2 390 release you used.

I think what you described is a concurrency problem not a semantic problem... Hopefully this discussion doesn't drift into the old "different code for different platform" dispute.
My answer to that would be the same as always: The different DB2 code approach does have an advantage for that platform as indicated by Orcale not being able to successfully sell on that hardware with the unix developed Oracle DBMS.
