applying 8.1.7.3.0 patchset

Hi

I installed 8.1.7.0.0 on a digital box and tried to apply the patchset but I screwed up. So, I deleted $ORACLE_HOME directory and all other directories that got created.
I then re-installed 8.1.7.0.0, copied its directory structure to 8.1.7.3.0. I changed $ORACLE_HOME to point to the new directory and try to apply the patchset again. However, I got the message that the patchset has already been applied to it. Hmmm how is this possible? Where is Oracle getting that information from? It is a new installation and has not been patched yet. How can I fix it?
