Oracle 7.1.3 and Oracle 8 from one client

If a site is currently using a 7.1.3 server (and all the clients have 7.1.3
client installed on them) is it possible to install the 8 client (which is
needed for a new application) without causing problems for the software that
still needs to connect to the 7.1.3 server ?
