Named resources would be more tedious to maintain as your number of instances and servers grows, as opposed to a repository served by Oracle Names. But named resources beat IP addresses any day of the week.

You have to watch for middle tier apps that want to do things like literal direct IP address references down to port numbers, those are horrid and would bypass OCM entirely, and usually are when the middle tier people decide to make their own connection management. That makes it hard for DBAs, as also, usually, all the users sign into Oracle as SALES_USER; forty threads with the same login coming down the pipe, it is hard to trace what particular unclosed thread or session is causing trouble.
