More Information about the kind of problem you experienced would be helpful:

- protocol (TCP/IP, I suppose...)
- konfiguration of your listener process
- any Oracle Names Server installed?

For quick information about the very basics you should try the commands ping <your_server_ip> and tnsping <your_service_name>.

A copy of tnsnames.ora, listener.ora and sqlnet.ora could also be helpful to determin the reasons for Net8 failure. Furthermore Oracle writes into different log and trace files, did you take a look at them?
