During installation, Oracle asks you for a sid and global name if you want to create that database using the Database Configuration Assistant. This assistant will be started after the install is complete. But you still need to explicitly set the ORACLE_SID in your UNIX environment to be able to connect to the new sid. You dont need to reinstall to correct this. ORACLE_SID is just an environment variable. Change it as you like. You havent specified where the old sid is showing. Check your $HOME/.profile file. You can also just do this at the command prompt to change the sid to newsid

$ export ORACLE_SID=newsid

at the command prompt to change to the new sid. Since you are running 8i, the instance automatically registers with the listener. That explains how you are able to connect from a remote client. Use the "lsnrctl status" command to check what databases the listener is actually listening to. Dont re-re-install.
