Here is my 2 cents.

  1. All the guide is ok if you un-tar your file with linux/unix tar. If you use winzip, you must turn off smart CF bala bala off. Since jre is a script, it will be messed up by winzip default smarty (STUPID). 8.1.7 comes with its own jre. So all the JDK or JRE version is 100% nonsense!
  2. You need to install all compat pacgages in linux (for 7.0 and up, absolutely required), and source a env script. you can find this info and why in the internet.
  3. The .bash_ stuff is triva, absolutely not critical (of course, you need to set DISPLAY to run X-window), at least you will get an informative error if it's because that.
