Check memory comsumption of oracle in your taskmanager (assuming you're using M$ WIN). Sum of blockbuffer+javapool+sharedpool should exceed to much of your memory, cause Windoze needs a lot of memory too! Disk I/O on a laptop isn'r the fastest in the world as well. More Memory, a second phys. disk might help (OS and DB on seperate disks is always a good idea!)
