Adding/dropping RedoLog groups in ver 7.1.6.2

Greetings,

I have a delicate problem, I want to add new Redo Log groups, do a
"alter system switch logfile" and then drop the old groups (without
restarting the instance)

I have done this several times in Oracle 8i, but not in an old version like this, 7.1.6.2

The only doc we got is an old book from version 7.0.13 and it says: Do
"alter database..." and then shut down the instance and restart.

My question here is if anyone knows if I must restart the instance in version 7.1.6.2
