There was a thought that a hot standby was a *substitute* for a hot backup of the primary. That's not feasible, because standbys are not robust, not 100% up-to-date. It becomes a much more viable proposition with 9i and its Data Guard feature, but short of that, pretending its a workable strategy is just plain dangerous.
