Walter,
Try putting the ORACLE_SID_SHUTDOWN_TIMEOUT value in registry for shutdown
to a higher value (60 or 120 or ..).
Because if oracle doesn't shutdown in the given timeout value, it is
shutdown aborted (killed).
Thus forcing a recovery, next time the databse is opened.
