The installation of Oracle 8.1.7 Enterprise Edition on Windows 2000 SP2 would hang on my machine at the point where the Net8 Configuration Assistant was started. No error messages or indications, just a JREW.EXE process running at 100%.

The following procedure resolved the issue:

1). Copy the Installation CD to your hard drive.

2). Modify the following file:

    <drive:\cd_copy_path>\Disk1\install\oraparam.ini

      JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS=-nojit -mx128m

3). Run the Oracle Installer from the hard drive copy of the CD.
