More often than not, the reason I see for using ODBC is that the suppliers of certain s/w chose it to reduce their development overhead|costs|experience|bottom line. Fewer teams, wider DB support (looks good on the OHP slides, sorry, ppt slides), one size fits all.

Performance takes a hit, quirky bugs show up, but you sail pas the most crucial stage: selling the stuff into the site in the fist place.

But there' no reason for an Oracle shop to build their apps using ODBC.
