It is easy to avoid data loss, all you have to do is keep all the archive log files from the moment of the begin backup command until the point of failure of the database. Of course this might mean that your disk fills up.

Problems I can envisage with your scenario.

  1. The system tablespace falls over and you don't have a backup. I don't see how you would get your data back. I rather suspect it is possible with some esoteric tricks but i wouldn't bet on it.
  2. some of your objects that you believe to be in the tablespace you are backing up in fact are not.
  3. loss of control files meaning database does not restart.

In short i'd recommend at least a full export of your database (or user account) every week. This will give you data loss but does ensure you can recover. You could also do a full hot backup.
