I was told by oracle that there's only 1 version of 8.1.7. (there're 2 version of 8.1.6: 32-bit and 64-bit). I installed 8.1.7 on my 64-bit Sun Solaris 2.7 without any problem.

When I used 64-bit 8.1.6, I did get some errors when creating the database. The trick is you have to include $ORACLE_HOME/lib64 in LD_LIBRARY_PATH, and it has to go in front of $ORACLE_HOME/lib. Do this before creating your database.
