I suspect that Suse 7.1 uses the glibc-2.2 libraries. 8.1.6 and 8.1.7 (so I assume 8.1.5 also) has been built against the glibc-2.1.3 libraries. Oracle have provided a patch available from OTN at http://download.oracle.com/otn/linux/oracle8i/glibc-2.1.3-stubs.tar.gz.
