Client install fails on Windows 2000

I just tried to install the 8i client (8.1.1.7 Standard for NT) on a Windows 2000 client PC. The install program starts, and gets as far as "Analyzing Pre-Requesits" and then just terminates. The install window disapears. There are no error messages, and no install log. An Orant directory is created, but
all it has in it is the product description file.

I tried to install the Ora 8.0.3 client (the CD was handy). It also failed, although it got further. It created the ORANT directory and a lot of subdirectories, and copied a lot of file. When it bombed, it displayed a meaningless error (Installation aborted, or something like that). It did write an install log, but it shows no errors.

The was no previously installed version of Oracle on the PC.

The userid I'm using has full admin privileges.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

                      Thanks much,
