I think I'd agree with this, Niall. However, I've had 8.1.7 on W2K running for a month or so now, and not a problem in sight (OK, OK -I know I don't thrash it to death! I do test it to destruction, sometimes, though, and it's never gone ballistic on me yet). That actually surprised me, given some of the stuff I've read about 8.1.7 here. I was expecting it to be far more flakey. So I don't think I'd necessarily wait until I was 'desperate' before going the extra point release... 'needy', maybe. 'Desperate', no!

On the whole, though, I'd still stick with 8.1.6.3 until 8.1.7 gets to a similar patch level.
