Use wget on the linux box to do the download. It can automatically restart the download if it fails.

The installer of oracle 8.0.x is character-based, 8.1.x needs X11. It is best to start both from a shell in an xterm. This is described in detail in the release notes and you should really read them.

I don't really understand that. Your Linux box hopefully already has an IP address and a name (can you ping it from the windows box?). In the Net8 setup wizard (don't know what it is called exactly, I don't use windows much), simply enter that name and the SID of your new database (The port number 1521 is ok unless you specify a different one during installation on the linux box).
