My own experience with this is back when I first started with Oracle (pretty much fresh out of school, very little real world or Oracle experience), I went through a round of interviews with Oracle. The position was for rdbms technical support - I'd be helping database admins with problems they couldn't find the answer to (ubiquitous ora-00600's, anyone?). To be honest, I was somewhat blown away by this - I had no experience with adminning or even Oracle to speak of, and I was going to be a technical expert resource? Of course, I needed the job and experience at the time, and would have willingly accepted it, but another position came up doing developer and some dba work prior to Oracle getting back to me (the answer was there was a freeze on hiring, and later they actually chopped a lot of tech-support positions. Glad I took the other position, or I'd have many more gray hairs to speak of :)

Cheers,
