The configuration assistant does not show you the actual cause of the failure. I had a similar problem due to improperly set kernel parameters. The configuration assistant log files show the first error when the configuration assistant tries to startup the instance. The "not connected" error is a subsequent error.

Post a copy of the configuration assistant log files. The log files should be located in a directory similar to :

/u01/oracle/admin/SID/create

where SID is the name of your database, either in upper of lower case, whichever you chose.
